INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA COURSE SCHEDULE

The Week of Activities
Before the
semester begins








 
Go to the Blackboard Vista course homepage and click on the
“Read this first!” link, then go to the “Math Orientation” to
view the Student Orientation Tutorial, read the Student Quick Start
Guide and obtain your Academic Systems Algebra log on
information. Next, log in to Academic Systems Algebra to look at
the material under “Resources” in preparation for the actual math
lessons. Also, on the Blackboard Vista course homepage read the
Welcome letter and the Syllabus. Personal Math Orientation
sessions are also available on campus. The course begins on
August 24th!

Week 1
Aug 24 - 30





















 
1. Read the Syllabus. It is the student's responsibility to know the
information contained in the syllabus! If you have not already
done so, complete the work under “Before the Semester Begins”
above, so that you get off to a good start in the course!

2. Use the Blackboard Vista Mail tool to email a Letter of
Introduction to your instructor that includes a little about
yourself, your educational goals, your phone number (including
area code), your mailing address, and an outside email address
(in case I need to contact you when our system is down). The
letter will count as your first homework grade.

3. Complete Lesson 3.1 - Introduction to Graphing (2 hours).
(See procedure below.) (Homework: Pages 165-167, problems
57, 61, 71, 83.) Use graph paper in the course where
appropriate.
Procedure: On all Academic Systems Algebra lessons,
complete the entire computer tutorial for the lesson, then
work extra problems from the Apply and Homework sections
of your text (odds so that you can check your answers in the
back of your text), then complete the homework assignment
(shown in italics above) that is to be turned in to your
instructor, and finally take the online Evaluate quiz. Please
read the Homework and Online Evaluate Quiz sections of the
syllabus.

4. Complete Lesson EII.E - Graphing Lines (2 hours). (Pages
113-114, problems 11, 15, 18, 19, 31, 37, 39, 47, 49, 52.)

Week 2
Aug 31 - Sept 6
1. Complete Lesson 5.1 - Solving Linear Systems of Equations (3
hours). (Pages 261-262, problems 33, 41, 51, 55.)

2. Complete Lesson 5.2 - Problem Solving (2 hours). (Pages 278-
279, problems 1, 5, 11, 17, 21, 23.) The two videos, Mixture
Problem Part 1 and Part 2 are supplements to Lesson 5.2.

Video files are in Macromedia Flash format. You must have

Week 3
Sept 7 - 13
1. Watch all of the "Systems of Linear Equations" videos Part 1,
Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. Print off Study Guide SE-1,
complete Worksheet SE-1. See below on how to print off a
worksheet. Worksheets are to be turned in as homework
following the guidelines listed under Homework on the syllabus.
Study guides and worksheets are in Acrobat Reader
Portable Document Format (PDF). Right click on the file link
and choose Save File As from the menu to save the file to
your local computer. The Adobe Acrobat Reader must be
installed on your computer to view the PDF version; Adobe
Acrobat Reader is available as a free download.

2. Complete Lesson EII.B - Polynomials (2 hours). Before taking
the Evaluate quiz, watch the Factoring Cubics video. (Pages
47-48, problems 9, 15, 23, 27, 31, 35, 37, 45, 47, 49.)

The campus is closed on Monday, September 7th, in observance of
Labor Day Holiday.

Week 4
Sept 14 - 20
1. Complete Lesson 6.3 Concept 2 – Multiplying and Dividing
Polynomial and study pages 346 – 349 in your book. (Page 355,
problems 37, 39, 43, 47, 51, 53.) Take the Evaluate Quiz.

2. Watch the Synthetic Division video and complete Worksheet
SD-1.

Week 5
Sept 21 - 27
1. Complete Lesson EII.C - Equations and Inequalities (2 hours).
Before taking the Evaluate quiz, watch the Literal Equations
video. (Page 65, problems 2, 7, 13, 17, 18.)

2. Watch the Interval Notation video. Complete Worksheet
IN-1 and submit it to your instructor.

3. Watch the two "Compound Inequalities" videos Part 1 and
Part 2. Complete Worksheet CI-1 and submit it to your
instructor.
Friday, September 25th, is the deadline for applying for Fall 2009
graduation.

Week 6
Sept 28 - Oct 4
4. Complete Lesson EII.F - Absolute Value (3 hours). Before
taking the Evaluate quiz, watch the two videos: Absolute
Value Inequalities Greater Than and Absolute Value
Inequalities Less Than. (Pages 134-135, problems 9, 11, 15, 17,
40, 42, 43, 47, 50.)
Week 7
Oct 5 - 11
1. Make an appointment with your instructor this week to take the
midterm exam (see note below).

2. Complete Lesson 8.1 - Rational Expressions I (2 hours). (Page
434, problems 3, 6, 9, 15, 18, 24, 27.)

3. Complete Lesson 8.2 - Rational Expressions II (3 hours).
(Pages 465-467, problems 9, 15, 21, 22, 31, 33, 37, 39, 47, 66,
67, 72, 76, 79, 82, 83.)
Note: The midterm exam must be taken next week on
Wednesday or Thursday, October 14th or 15th. Allow a three
hour block of time during the hours of 8 AM until 9 PM for the
exam. If you are close to CCC, make an appointment by email
with your instructor to take the midterm exam on campus. If
you are off-site, fill out the Proctor Request Form and mail
or fax it to your instructor. The Midterm Exam Review will
indicate the types of problems that will be on the exam. Read
the Midterm Exam portion of the Syllabus for more
information.

Week 8
Oct 12 - 18
1. On Wednesday or Thursday, take the proctored paper-andpencil
Midterm Exam.

2. Complete Lesson 8.3 - Rational Expression Equations with
Fractions (2 hours). (Page 481, problems 6, 9, 16, 19, 24.)
Friday, October 16th, is the last day to change from credit to audit.

Oct 19 - 25
1. Complete Lesson 8.4 - Problem Solving (2 hours). (Pages 497-
498, problems 11, 13, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27.)
Week 10
Oct 26 - Nov 1
1. Complete Lesson 9.1 - Roots and Radicals (3 hours). (Page
535, problems 8, 9, 13, 15, 19.)

2. Complete Lesson 9.2 - Rational Exponents (4 hours). (Pages
569-571, problems 10, 17, 23, 28, 48, 51, 55, 66, 81, 82, 84.)

Week 11
Nov 2 - 8
1. Complete Lesson 10.1 Quadratic Equations I (2 hours). (Page
591, problems 14, 23, 35, 40, 46, 49.)

2. Complete Lesson 10.2 - Quadratic Equations II (2 hours).
(Pages 619-620, problems 17, 22, 35, 39, 43.)

Week 12
Nov 9 - 15
1. Complete Lesson 10.3 - Complex Numbers (2 hours). (Page
639, problems 4, 11, 14, 17, 23, 26.)

2. Watch the Midpoint and Distance video. Complete
Worksheet MP-1 and submit it to your instructor.
Friday, November 13th, is the last day to withdraw from a 16
week class.

Week 13
Nov 16 - 22
1. Review Equations of Circles on pages 153 – 155 in your book
(Week 1, Lesson 3.1 Concept 3). Review Completing the
Square on pages 595 – 600 in your book (Week 6, Lesson 10.2
Concept 1). Print off the Circles Study Guide, complete
Worksheet C-1 and submit it to your instructor.
Week 14
Nov 23 - 29
2. Complete Lesson 13.1 - Nonlinear Equations (3 hours). (Page
841, problems 1, 4, 6, 9, 12.)

3. Begin Lesson 11.1 - Functions (4 hours).This lesson should be
continued and completed by early next week. (Pages 679-84,
problems 13, 19, 20, 22, 35, 37, 47, 63, 64.)

November 26 - 29 is the Thanksgiving Holiday. Campus is closed.
(Classes will not meet on Wednesday, November 25th, but the campus
will be open until 4:30 PM)

Week 15
Nov 30 - Dec 6
1. Make an appointment with your instructor this week to take the
Final Exam (see note below).

2. Complete Lesson 11.1 - Functions (4 hours). (Pages 679-84,
problems 13, 19, 20, 22, 35, 37, 47, 63, 64.)

3. Watch the "Function Notation" videos:   Part 1, Part 2.
Print off Study Guide FN-1, complete Worksheet FN-1 and
submit it to your instructor.

Note: The Final Exam must be taken next week on Tuesday
or Wednesday, December 8th or 9th. Allow a three hour block
of time during the hours of 8 AM until 9 PM for the exam. If
you are close to Clovis Community College, make an
appointment by email with your instructor to take the final
exam on campus. If you are off-site, fill out the Proctor
Request Form and mail or fax it to your instructor. The
Final Exam Review will indicate the types of problems that
will be on the exam. Read the Final Exam portion of the
Syllabus for more information.

Week 16
Dec 7 - 11
1. On Tuesday or Wednesday, take the proctored paper-andpencil
Final Exam. The Final Exam must be completed
and returned to me by Wednesday, December 9th.
